A lot of the words used in 50s/60s movies have fallen out of common use in the last couple of decades and the teenagers of today's India would have a hard time recognising the meanings of some of them! If you can follow it, your Hindi is way better than you think. So go for Chalti... - the language is simple and the jokes are more situational than semantic. Moreover, the broad facial expressions of everybody would let you in on the jokes, even if the dialogues are incomprehensible!Bollyviewerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17270927806254662068noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5149142221218445999.post-745850147917267442009-06-23T06:37:57.238+02:002009-06-23T06:37:57.238+02:00For un-subtitled movies though, oldies are not a g...
For un-subtitled movies though, oldies are not a good choice.

I would tend to disagree. I find the diction much clearer in older films, and love the language in the Muslim Socials. Give me heavily Urdu over heavily-sanskritised shuddh any day. I obviously miss some of the vocabulary, but I would much rather watch something like Mughal-e-azam with the subs off that some trendy Hinglish-filled release of the last 5 years or so. The reason I've stayed away from Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi so far is that I know my Hindi is not up to the jokes yet.mehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09042500344000182850noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5149142221218445999.post-5007064897354932522009-06-23T06:26:40.941+02:002009-06-23T06:26:40.941+02:00I wonder whats with Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi DVDs - mi...I wonder whats with Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi DVDs - mine isnt subtitled either. I so wanted to show it to a non-Hindi speaking friend and couldnt because of that. Is your copy bought in India, too?

For un-subtitled movies though, oldies are not a good choice. Its better to start with newer movies that use more Hinglish. Older ones have language that even I find difficult to understand sometimes - the Urdu in Muslim Socials or historicals, for example.Bollyviewerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17270927806254662068noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5149142221218445999.post-23795927976680991212009-06-22T02:13:01.266+02:002009-06-22T02:13:01.266+02:00you may become a fluent Hindi speaker after watchi...you may become a fluent Hindi speaker after watching un-subtitled movies

Yes, that's true. On a good day I can get 80% of well-enunciated dialogue without subtitles but it is very hard work. When I went to the cinema to see Lage Raho Munnabhai they forgot to put up the subs for the first 10 minutes and although I kept up, I was thinking that I would be mentally shattered by the end of the film. :)mehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09042500344000182850noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5149142221218445999.post-74873851762457877472009-06-21T07:49:17.776+02:002009-06-21T07:49:17.776+02:00You are welcome, Maxqnz. Have you tried checking movies on Rajshri and Bigflix? Both sites have legitimate prints up for free viewing or paid download. And Rajshri has an excellent selection of oldies (Hindi as well as Bangla and Tamil). Most of the films are unsubtitled, though. So, if you dont need subtitles, its a very good option, given how hard it is for you to get movies down under.Bollyviewerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17270927806254662068noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5149142221218445999.post-69596160183429738572009-06-20T02:38:26.608+02:002009-06-20T02:38:26.608+02:00Thanks for the list of movies. Thanks to the high cost shipping all the way up here to Aotearoa, each and every one of my DVDs has probably cost on average around $12-$15US, which both explains why I only have 80 or so and why I have to be very certain I'm not going to regret a purchase before making it. That is where blogs like yours provide me with invaluable assistance. :)mehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09042500344000182850noreply@blogger.com
