Re the Rekha character, the very fact that she chooses to marry a guy who is already in love with someone else does not make me think very highly of her. Didn't she think she deserved better than somebody else's boyfriend? But then again, the story is written by a man!Bollyviewerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17270927806254662068noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5149142221218445999.post-3858234941626324692018-03-12T01:21:32.902+01:002018-03-12T01:21:32.902+01:00This comment has been removed by the author.Bollyviewerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17270927806254662068noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5149142221218445999.post-36933750193273996752018-03-10T09:00:40.203+01:002018-03-10T09:00:40.203+01:00Omg thank you so much for this review! Saw this mo...Omg thank you so much for this review! Saw this movie last night and really felt guilty that I was in the minority for not liking it, but you're piece made me feel someone is like me. I just found so much of the film confusing and trying to be traditional and modern all at once. So, I felt this script could have gone in many other directions that would have made it more interesting. For one, does anybody else feel maya has a mental illness? She is not only immature, but delusional and crazy! I saw streaks of narcissism and schizophrenia. And idk, I just can't sympathize with naseer character, sorry. I just saw him as a weak, hypocritical, double standard man. He just wanted the best of both worlds. I did genuinely feel he was falling for sudha. He was attracted to her and started enjoying her company. Maya became like a nagging responsibility for him. She was like that suicidal friend you're just scared for and always have to save. The film could have been about him making the decision to cut off his ex and embrace a new nature love. In that sense, it could have been an empowering, coming of age story for a male character in a different way. I don't know what the title or concept of ijazat is for. These are the things about the movie that make it seem oldfashion. I liked sudha, they could have made it more about her finding herself after a broken marriage. I did not like maya. Sudha is so much more beautiful, sexy and talented. Don't know how anyone could resist her. This is long, but I'll try to wrap up. Finally, i love naseer as an actor, but I have seen him so much as the ladies man, flirt etc. that he comes off as a brat in these sorts of roles. He appreciatess sudha only after he ruins everything with his indecisiveness. So he really never deserved her. Feet touching made me cringe. Anyway, please tell me what you think of my ideas!
Phushphushhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06754175287853487568noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5149142221218445999.post-78591250257284143682013-10-04T11:54:29.359+02:002013-10-04T11:54:29.359+02:00The more I read your reviews, the more I am enjoyi...The more I read your reviews, the more I am enjoying them, discovered them years too late :(... I totally agree with you, I just did not get this 'ijaazat' business. Loved the music and the performances, just hated the story and its characters. I saw the movie only because of the songs and was disappointed that the lovely 'mera kuch samaan' belonged to the annoying Maya.Neerunoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5149142221218445999.post-33613203366820213842011-03-22T09:08:27.752+01:002011-03-22T09:08:27.752+01:00Yes, Anuradha I got it! Besides, my idea of marriage is a union between equals - a partnership - and you do NOT touch your partner's feet. So tying up loose ends is all very well, but here it is done in a way that rouses all my modern feminist ire. Which is why I am so ambivalent toward this film - it is beautifully made but espouses such traditional values!Bollyviewerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17270927806254662068noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5149142221218445999.post-11487281586442877162011-03-20T02:22:26.105+01:002011-03-20T02:22:26.105+01:00I am coming very, very late to this post but aiyya...I am coming very, very late to this post but aiyyam laiking it berry much!

Just a note to add to your review - Rekha touches Naseer's feet not because she is still attracted to him - she says she left him the first time without informing him; and now, she wants his permission to leave. There is certainly regret for what happened (or did not happen) but I think it is more that she is tying up some unfinished business - sort of.Anuradha Warrierhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00340730648674805773noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5149142221218445999.post-19793963838858652602009-04-28T09:14:00.000+02:002009-04-28T09:14:00.000+02:00Taking into account the considerable Hindi movie-w...Taking into account the considerable Hindi movie-watching experience thats gone into the statement, I'd say it reveals surprise at the unusual! ;-)Bollyviewerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17270927806254662068noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5149142221218445999.post-46601979421016786522009-04-28T00:29:00.001+02:002009-04-28T00:29:00.001+02:00Damn formatting - blogger needs to fix that.Damn formatting - blogger needs to fix that.Amithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08075038336828726670noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5149142221218445999.post-31774499841255958532009-04-28T00:29:00.000+02:002009-04-28T00:29:00.000+02:00Given that, I was surprised that Rekha's character...Given that, I was surprised that Rekha's character is allowed a second marriage..Does the surprise reveal your own pre-conceived notion or bias? :)Amithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08075038336828726670noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5149142221218445999.post-32306796234999880472009-04-27T19:32:00.000+02:002009-04-27T19:32:00.000+02:00Poor you! You need to watch a nice Shammi movie to get over the suffering.

Gulzar's heroines maybe strong characters (as in, the opposite of bimbos more usually seen in normal movies) but they always tend to be on the very traditional side. So they always love their first love unwaveringly no matter how unfaithful he is (remember Hema-Jeetendra's Khushboo?) because a Bhartiya naari loves only her hubby for seven lives! Given that, I was surprised that Rekha's character is allowed a second marriage (albeit with a much older man) but she makes up for it by regretting not sticking with her first one! ;-)Bollyviewerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17270927806254662068noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5149142221218445999.post-42686473761929735282009-04-27T14:54:00.000+02:002009-04-27T14:54:00.000+02:00Your review captures the nuances well, which were ...Your review captures the nuances well, which were well done, but the characters' flaws just ruined it for me. I told Beth at one point: only a MAN could have written this! and I too did not get the same feeling about the ending, although it could be that I was also blinded by Shashi pyaar (and also relief that my suffering was over!) :-) Was Sudha really dumb enough to want to return to Naseer? Somewhere in the movie she tells him that she fell for him when he first told her about how much he loves Maya (dunno how a man so in love with another woman is so attractive to her!). In the present, the way she cleans up after him and waits upon him in the waiting room is indicative of her undimmed affection and only her husband's arrival recalls her to reality. Her regret when she learns of why Mahendra didnt come for her when she left him, and her tears at the end - everything signals that poor Shashi has another onscreen wife who doesnt realise she's been upgraded!Bollyviewerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17270927806254662068noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5149142221218445999.post-67679794423042174312009-04-27T02:11:00.000+02:002009-04-27T02:11:00.000+02:00Hmmm.... I HATED the characters (except Sudha after she decides to leave) and could not understand why on earth anyone would want to tell this story, even if they told it well. I'm glad you call the writers out for having these people going ahead with their marriage - very aggravating. And I'll take your word on the dialogues - the subtitles on mine were pretty good, now that you mention it.

Oooh and PS I interpreted the ending differently - maybe I am too blinded by Shashi-pyaar?Beth Loves Bollywoodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05540154833326987567noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5149142221218445999.post-52572084628526477512008-12-20T11:25:00.000+01:002008-12-20T11:25:00.000+01:00The movie had stunning cinematography and I loved ...The movie had stunning cinematography and I loved how the camera seemed to take its time savoring each moment and each expression.
